GYROKINESIS® was developed by Juliu Horvath. The motion concept includes the most important elements of yoga, dance and tai chi.
GYROKINESIS® systematically and gently trains joints and muscles by rhythmic wavelike movements. The spine is considered the central supporting element which gains new flexibility by harmonic wavelike, spiral and circular movements. The corresponding breathing patterns stimulate the nervous system and open up the body meridiens thus releasing waste products and toxic substances that can be taken away by the oxygen-enhanced bloodstream.
The flowing movement prevents static held-up positions and thereby superfluous body waste deposit and tensions.
The method stimulates energy in a natural way and helps to overcome listlessness and lethargy. The training is done in groups standing up as well as lying down. The complete training program is done without any training machines so the acquired exercises can be partially repeated at home or at work to relax the body from one-sided working positions.

What is GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® exercise?
The Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis methods are complementary exercise methods that fall under one umbrella- the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®. Both methods were developed by Juliu Horvath, an ethnic Hungarian, professional dancer from Romania. Horvath suffered a series of debilitating injuries during his dance career, and began developing what are now known as the Gyrotonic® and Gyrokinesis Methods as a way to heal himself and regain his strength and agility.

Gyrotonic exercises are performed on custom-designed Gyrotonic equipment, whereas Gyrokinesis exercises are performed on a mat and chair. Both Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis exercise sequences are composed of spiraling, circular movements, which flow together seamlessly in rhythmic repetitions, with corresponding breath. Each movement flows into the next, allowing the joints to move through a natural range of motion without jarring or compression. These carefully crafted sequences create balance, efficiency, strength and flexibility.

Since the thirty plus years since Horvath began developing the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis methods, the Gyrotonic Expansion System has grown to include a global community of over 7,800 Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis Trainers teaching in 52 countries.

GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® exercise methods moving as an expression of Life, at Raritan Valley Gyrotonic in NJ

GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® exercise methods moving as an expression of Life, at Raritan Valley Gyrotonic in New Jersey. rvgyrotonic.com

“The nature of things are … to move.
Life is movement … and an expression of existence is movement.
When something doesn’t move anymore that’s an expression of death.
With other words… something stagnating.
Inside our bodies is the same situation.
The more it moves the more expression of life.
The less it moves the more expression is towards death.”
Juliu Horvath _
Creator of the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®

GYROTONIC® exercises created by Juliu Horvath is a workout that exercises your entire body, using mainly circular motions to replicate the muscular movements of swimming, yoga, dance, gymnastic and even tai chi. It is done on Specialized Gyrotonic Equipment.

Raritan valley Gyrotonic is a boutique studio specializing exclusively in the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®.
Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis exercise methods Designed to take the body “beyond its current limitations,” Gyrotonic training stretches, strengthens and elongates muscles, stimulating connective tissue in and around the joints and improving balance, coordination, strength and flexibility. Juliu Horvath, creator and founder of the Gyrotonic Expansion System® Horvath believes that exercise should be a creative and playful experience: “I want music in my body and poetry in my body, and I want to be skillful without struggle; it has to come without struggle.”

The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® is composed of Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis exercise methods.
The Gyrokinesis program, originally called “Yoga for Dancers,” which works the entire body without equipment by stimulating internal organs through fluid and gentle manipulation of multiple joints; and Gyrotonic training, which uses apparatus that permits the person to move with support and resistance. Both forms of exercise allow the body to work in continuous, flowing movements and are synchronized with corresponding breathing patterns. Advocates of the work say it enhances aerobic and cardiovascular stimulation and promotes neuromuscular rejuvenation.

Gyrokinesis once called yoga for dancers
and more akin to yoga – Gyrokinesis is the foundation of the system and focuses on a specialized breathing technique on top of controlling the body’s movements to increase flexibility, balance and strength.  It utilizes the body in a way that not only builds strength and flexibility, but also invigorate your organs and shape your muscles through its rhythmic movements.

If you’d like more information on the Gyrotonic or Gyrokinesis exercises, check out the video below or visit or contact Raritan Valley Gyrotonic online. And if you’re looking for a deeper understanding of the Gyrotonic Expansion System, check out RV Gyrotonic’s teacher trainings available in NYC and NJ, which will help you on your journey to a healthier, more-connected body.

Gyrotonic & Gyrokinesis Instructor Training for New York and New Jersey

Whether you are already a fitness instructor in a discipline along the lines of yoga, Tai Chi or Pilates, or you are looking for a new way to share health and wellness with the world, Raritan Valley Gyrotonic offers the New York City and New Jersey areas instructor courses that will get you well on your way to a new and exciting fitness experience.

The first step in the process of becoming an instructor is to take several private sessions to become familiar with the method, then sign up for a Gyrokinesis pre-training or Gyrotonic pre-training course.  As the foundation of the Gyrotonic method, instruction in Gyrokinesis lays the groundwork for certification and is great instruction for those who simply desire to deepen their own practice with a better understanding for the Gyrotonic Expansion System.

After a Gyrokinesis pre-training course or Gyrotonic pre-training course, instructors can delve into Gyrotonic teacher trainings and Gyrokinesis teacher trainings held at the Raritan Valley Gyrotonic studio. These course build upon the pre-training class and go into more detail on the exercise method to ensure that participants can offer their students the most knowledgeable and complete experience. You can also take confidence in the instructor training courses offered at RV Gyrotonic because the studio is registered with and approved by the central Gyrotonic entity – a certification that is not easy to come by.

If you are not quite sure whether teacher training is right for you or you are wondering what the Gyrotonic Expansion System entails, there are a few major things that you should be aware of before taking the training courses:

  • As stated above, Gyrokinesis is the foundation of the Gyrotonic system. While not necessary, it’s highly recommended instructors and students have an understanding of Gyrokinesis before moving on and enrolling in the other available Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis trainings.
  • While part of the same method, there is a slight difference between Gyrotonics and Gyrokinesis. Gyrokinesis is about controlled breathing and movement with the only tools being your body and a small stool. Gyrotonics incorporates the breathing method learned in Gyrokinesis, and uses a specially created machine to guide the body’s movements. Both offer incredible cardio benefits and help people of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels achieve high levels of control, stability and body confidence.
  • It’s also important to note, the special machine used in Gyrotonics – called the Gyrotonic Pulley Tower – is a mandatory piece of equipment for Gyrotonic exercises.

Due to the nature of the Gyrotonic Expansion System, many of the people we see come through for Gyrotonic teacher training in NJ have a strong background in yoga, Pilates or physical therapy. However, this should not by any means imply that you need to have this kind of previous training yourself in order to become an instructor.

To learn more about the instructor courses, visit Raritan Valley Gyrotonic online or check out our scheduler, to see what training classes are available. For more information on classes or Gyrotonic teacher training in NJ or NYC, call our studio at (908) 288-7551. The Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis workout methods are part of a life-long journey to health, whether you want specific training or would like an introduction, we look forward to helping you get started.

Why Gyrotonics & Gyrokinesis is a Great Alternative to Yoga

Though yoga has been a particularly popular fitness trend over the last decade, many of its practitioners realize that it has a number of shortcomings. Some simply accept them and just go to yoga classes without doing much else, which often leads to an incomplete fitness program.

However, as the popularity of the Gyrotonic Expansion System grows, people are finding that both Gyrotonics and Gyrokinesis are not only an excellent way to get the relaxation and flexibility that yoga offers, but also improved strength from head to toe.

If you’ve yet to experience Gyrotonics or see the fitness method in action, check out the video below for a quick introductory demonstration of the machine and movements. If you’re sold on the benefits and want to get started, with a Gyrotonic session or Gyrokinesis class contact Shirely Wallitsch at Raritan Valley Gyrotonic today.

The studio also offers Gyrotonich teacher training for NYC and New Jersey residents, click here for more info.

5 Reasons Gyrotonics is Better than Your Current Fitness Routine

As far as fitness and health programs are concerned, the general rule of thumb is that the more effective the workout, the more difficult the program will be to begin. Oftentimes, people who are new to working out will try one of these difficult regimens in an attempt to achieve impressive results as fast as possible and then end up giving up on the routine because of its difficulty – sometimes even swearing off fitness altogether.

Conversely, the Gyrotonic expansion system provides an excellent workout that delivers results and is entirely accessible by anyone. Furthermore, a regular fitness routine that includes Gyrotonics and Gyrokinesis offers a number of health benefits that go far beyond a toned body. Because of all this, the Gyrotonic expansion system is right for anyone – exercise newcomer or seasoned athlete alike – looking to take their fitness up a level. The following are reasons why the mind-body workout method is so beneficial for everyone:

  1. Increase Core Strength

Other than crunches or sit ups, most people don’t pay enough attention to the body’s core. This is particularly problematic since having a fit core helps achieve physical gains for the rest of the body as well. Most of the sets offered in Gyrotonics activate and strengthen the core, which ends up building confidence in practitioners.

  1. Promotes Incredible Flexibility

People who are just starting out with the Gyrotonic expansion system often remark that they didn’t realize just how inflexible they are. This is doubly true for those who have a history of fitness under their belts as running and weight lifting, while great for their individual goals, end up tightening any joints that don’t get shown attention. Gyrotonics will get your entire body moving and reaching levels of flexibility you never thought would be possible.

  1. Alignment Awareness

Along with being able to stretch and move your body better, the Gyrotonic system will enhance the way your bones work with each other. With this workout method, you will become more aware of the way that your skeletal system is aligned and make correcting posture or movement deficiencies an effortless task.

  1. Reduces Risk of Injury and Joint Pain

By building both your flexibility and strength, Gyrotonics gives your body the capacity to participate in activities that you may have previously been afraid to do because of fear of injury or pain aggravation. Because of this great benefit, this body evolution system is often prescribed as an effective form of physical therapy. (If you’re a physical therapist or fitness instructor, you can also contact us for Gyrotonic teacher training in NYC and New Jersey.)

  1. Surprisingly Relaxing

One of the most beneficial traits that comes with doing Gyrotonics is that it relaxes people as they complete the workout session. The Gyrotonic exercise program has its sets fluidly move from one into another in a rhythmic and circular pattern, which makes for an incredibly relaxing experience.
